28. Red-eyed Mercy

I gasped when I saw the color of Mercy's eyes, unsure of how to react. "Mercy," I said softly, stepping between her and Nancy, taking her face between my hands, forcing her to look up at me. 'Your eyes are red? How?' I thought but then shook my head as I remembered. 'She was born of a recreant, but you can't be a recreant without first being a vampire. She's half vampire, and it's not her fault that her eyes are gold.'
