16. Nightmares

I hadn't realized how much time had passed by the time I heard Mercy's heart rate spiking, her breathing becoming ragged as she started gripping my shoulder, her nails threatening to break the skin. I'd been watching her as she slept, not having much else to do, without leaving the bed, and the television didn't interest me in the slightest. 'What's this, then? A bad dream? She's only been asleep for about three hours, not long enough to be waking up this quickly.' I thought as I studied her face, but that only increased my worries about her. Her body was being rapidly drenched in sweat, her heartbeat erratic and pounding, and I could see her eyes darting back and forth behind her eyelids. I struggled with whether I should wake her out of her nightmare, but it wasn't until I saw a tear running down her cheek that I'd made up my mind.
